You can register a vehicle in your own name. Vehicles cannot be registered in more than one name.
To register a vehicle your age must be at least:

  • 17 years and 9 months – for a motorcycle
  • 18 years – for a heavy vehicle or trailer (over 4.5 tonnes Gross Vehicle Mass).

If under the minimum age, your vehicle must be registered in someone else’s name (eg. a parent, guardian or sibling).

For information on how to register a vehicle see light vehicle registration.

A company or incorporated association
A company or incorporated association may have a vehicle registered in its name.

Companies have an Australian Company Number (ACN). Incorporated associations will not have an ACN but may be incorporated in a number of ways eg through an Act of Parliament or by Royal Charter.  They may include organisations such as hospitals, municipal councils or trade unions.
