Freeway works for the $1.39 billion Monash-CityLink-West Gate (M1) Upgrade commenced in 2007 and are now largely complete.

Improvements to assist traffic flow, ease congestion and enhance safety along the 75 kilometre M1 route between Werribee and Narre Warren included:

  • extra traffic lanes and access ramp changes on sections of the Monash Freeway west of Heatherton Road Doveton, on CityLink to the Southern Link tunnels, and on the West Gate Freeway through Port Melbourne
  • implementation of a dynamically linked electronic freeway management system between Narre Warren and Werribee  to help manage and monitor traffic flow and to assist in response to incidents
  • installation of overhead traffic lane signs, ramp metering signals, variable speed limit signs, and electronic driver information signs at key locations

The West Gate Bridge has been strengthened and upgraded to carry five lanes in each direction, with new public safety barriers also installed. Five lanes are now open each way on the bridge with ongoing maintenance works requiring lane closures at times out of peak hours.
