The Yarra Glen Truck Bypass is a $15 million project providing a new 1.4km road link east of the Yarra Glen township as an alternative route to divert Melba Highway truck traffic away from the town centre.
The signed bypass route extends from the Melba Highway (Bell Street)/Healesville-Yarra Glen Road intersection south of Yarra Glen, then runs north from Healesville-Yarra Glen Road via a new road link, reconnecting with the Melba Highway at Old Healesville Road.
Intersection improvements, route signing and the new two-way road link encourage Melba Highway truck traffic away from the town centre.
The bypass opened in May 2010. In mid 2011 the Bell Street roundabout and intersection improvements at Armstrong Grove/Healesville-Yarra Glen Road were completed.
- a new 1.4 kilometre two-way road (one lane in each direction) link
- a roundabout at the Bell Street/Healesville-Yarra Glen Road intersection
- turning lanes at the Armstrong Grove/Healesville-Yarra Glen Road intersection
- roundabouts at the bypass connections with Healesville-Yarra Glen Road and Old Healesville Road/Melba Highway
- a 50km/h speed limit along Bell Street through Yarra Glen township.
- safer traffic conditions through the town centre
- improved amenity for residents, shoppers and visitors to Yarra Glen
- travel time savings for trucks and highway traffic travelling to destinations beyond Yarra Glen
- reduced traffic congestion through the township during peak holiday periods.
Landscaping works for the Bell Street roundabout area will be completed by the end of 2011. Plans can be viewed and downloaded from More Information section below, and are displayed on the community noticeboard outside the Maternal & Child Health Centre on Bell Street.
