Accessibility and safety has been enhanced with the construction of three platform tram stops replacing the older style tram stops on St Kilda Road at:
- Commercial Road Tram stop 25
- High Street Tram stop 27
- Union Street Tram stop 29
Platform tram stops protect passengers from traffic and give passengers more space when waiting for a boarding the tram.
The new platform tram stops are located in pairs on the city side of the intersections at Commercial Road (Stop 25), High Street (Stop 27), and Union Street (Stop 29).
The new platform tram stops cater for traffic flow, access to properties and accessibility for all tram passengers.
The benefits of platform tram stops include:
- safer and easier access to tram services for the elderly, people with disabilities and passengers with prams
- increased protection from traffic for passengers
- real time tram arrival displays
- improved passenger shelters, seating and lighting.
Traffic signals have been modified to provide more green time for trams. This will allow trams to travel with minimal delay through intersections along St Kilda Road.
