Works are underway on a transport improvement project for Route 59 along Mt Alexander Road from Victoria Street, Flemington to the intersection of Church Street, Parkville and Flemington Road, North Melbourne. This section of road experiences some of the heaviest congestion on the tram network.
These improvements aim to reduce tram travel times by up to five minutes in the morning peak for city bound trams and improve tram reliability for the 8.4 million tram passengers who travel on tram route 59 each year.
New platform tram stops and other changes will improve access and safety for passengers, pedestrians and cyclists.
What has been constructed?
- Widening of Mt Alexander Road at Debneys Park to separate trams from traffic
- Improved signal priority for trams.
- New platform tram stops at Stop 22 Boundary Road, North Melbourne and Stop 23 Flemington Community Centre, Flemington
- Improved bicycle and pedestrian facilities.
- Tram track renewal.
- An extended safer right turn for vehicles from Mt Alexander Road into Boundary Road.
