Current progress
BMD Constructions Pty Ltd is VicRoads contractor for the construction works. Preparatory work is continuing along the west side and median strip of Clyde Road with trees being removed ahead of earthworks. The timber from the removed trees was donated to Berwick District Woodworkers Club. The timber is being cut will be used to create items for the local community. Some mulch was also donated to various community groups within Berwick.
To maintain pedestrian access, a temporary fence and pedestrian footpath has been installed on the west side of Clyde Road between Mansfield Street and High Street.
Clyde Road, one-way service road access from Jane Street to Mansfield Street
Construction in the existing median section requires the installation of safe work barriers, resulting in narrower access on the service road. In order to continue to provide on-street parking and maintain safety for vehicles using the service road, it will be restricted to one-way traffic as shown below. Traffic must enter via Jane Street.

Rail and Clyde Road temporary closure works undertaken on 14 and 15 April 2012
VicTrack undertook track improvement works as part of the Clyde Road Upgrade. The rail line (between Oakleigh and Pakenham) and Clyde Road (between Jane Street and Enterprise Avenue) was closed on Saturday 14 April and Sunday 15 April. Detours were in place for drivers and public transport services continued to operate. Pedestrian and cyclist access was available via Berwick Train Station.
VicRoads provided a free shuttle bus service each day from 8.30am to 5.30pm to provide access to Berwick Market Place, Berwick Village, High Street, Clyde Road (between High Street and Reserve Street), Reserve Street, Gloucester Avenue and Berwick Train Station.
VicRoads and VicTrack thank you for your patience during these improvement works. Please continue to be aware of roadwork signs and changed speed limits for the safety of all road users and work crews.

Involving the community
Information is advertised in local newspapers, letterbox dropped and distributed to members of the community who have registered for our mailing list during the project.
To better understand how the Clyde Road Upgrade may impact local businesses, VicRoads conducted a survey for businesses located in Berwick. You can view key findings in the
Clyde Road Upgrade - Business survey summary report February 2012 [PDF, 2pp, 82KB].This information will help develop a works schedule that, where possible, aims to avoid disruption during busy periods.
VicRoads has worked closely with the Berwick community, arborists, National Trust, Residents, Ratepayers and Friends of Berwick Village, City of Casey and Berwick District Woodworkers Club to develop a strategy to retain, relocate and protect as many of the trees along Clyde Road as possible.
As part of that strategy, VicRoads has adopted specialised construction techniques to retain most of the trees on the east side of Clyde Road and has relocated seven trees to the Old Cheese Factory and Pioneers Park in Berwick. We have cut and donated timber from the removed trees to Berwick District Woodworkers Club and will plant approximately 90 advanced oak trees to help restore the leafy character of Clyde Road.
In addition, VicRoads has removed and transported the oak tree which was located in front of the Genesis Gym to Monash University in Berwick. The move was undertaken on 15 April 2012 while the rail and road works at the Clyde Road level crossing occurred, to avoid the need to close the road again on another date. The tree has been moved in anticipation of its development as a public art carving honouring Berwick's heritage.
After cutting the tree trunk away from its roots a crane and a specialist over-dimensional haulage vehicle were used to lift the tree and place it at its new home.
