Project Overview
VicRoads has developed a proposal to improve the Chandler Highway Bridge over the Yarra River.

Four concept options to improve the operation, congestion and safety of the Chandler Highway Bridge are available for viewing.

Options

• Provision of four traffic lanes
• It provides bicycle and pedestrian facilities
• It provides marked on road bicycle lanes on the new bridge
• No acquisition of private residential property
• Includes traffic signals at Yarra Boulevard
• Impacts Amcor site
• Minor impact on Guide Dogs entrance,
• Significant conflict with Melbourne Water’s Trunk Sewer/Siphon
• Equal highest environmental impact
• May be a medium term option as it relies on the ongoing use of the existing 120 year old bridge
• An additional two lanes, to maintain a total of four lanes, would be required if the existing bridge cannot remain in service
• Second highest cost of the four options.

Option 2: New four lane bridge east (Ivanhoe side) of existing bridge.

Points to note:

• Provision of four traffic lanes
• Existing bridge is converted for pedestrian and cyclist use
• It provides marked on-road bicycle lanes on the new bridge
• No acquisition of private residential property
• Includes traffic signals at Yarra Boulevard
• It has the same significant impacts of Option 1
  - Impact on Amcor site
  - Impacts Guide dog site access
  - Equal highest environmental impact
  - Significant impact with Melbourne Water’s Trunk Sewer/Siphon
• This option is the most expensive option.

Option 3: New two lane bridge west (city side) of existing bridge.

Points to note:

• Provision of four traffic lanes
• It provides bicycle and pedestrian facilities
• It provides marked on road bicycle lanes on the new bridge
• No acquisition of private residential property
• Minimal or no impact on other private non-residential property
• Includes traffic signals at Yarra Boulevard
• May be a medium term option as it relies on the ongoing use of the existing 120 year old bridge
• An additional two lanes, to maintain a total of four lanes, would be required if the existing bridge cannot remain in service
• Equal lowest impact on the environment
• Has manageable conflicts with utility services
• Minimises cost (is the cheapest option of the four).

Option 4: New four lane bridge west (city side) of existing bridge.

Points to note:

• Provision of four traffic lanes
• Existing bridge is converted for pedestrian and cyclist use
• It provides marked on-road bicycle lanes on the new bridge
• No acquisition of private residential property
• Very low or no impact on private non-residential property
• Includes traffic signals at Yarra Boulevard
• Equal lowest impact on the environment
• Has manageable conflicts with utility services
• Second least expensive option and likely to be the most cost effective option long-term.

Next steps
The most suitable proposal will be further developed and submitted for funding consideration as part of a future roads program. All proposals for improvement projects are considered and prioritised on a state wide basis and any future improvements to the Chandler Highway Bridge will be considered in this context.
