Main Road, St Albans - grade separation study

Bookmark and Share

Project overview
An investigation of options to eliminate the busy rail level crossing on Main Road St Albans commenced in September 2009.

The proposal to lower the rail line beneath Main Road was identified for detailed consideration following extensive consultation with local residents, traders, Brimbank Council and other stakeholders as part of the St Albans Precinct Strategy.

Lowering the rail line is a better option than a local bypass road investigated in the 2006 Bypass Planning Study which would have more negative impacts on properties and businesses in the area, and on the local environment.

The rail underpass will be considered in the context of other possible future actions to reduce traffic congestion on the St Albans road network, including elimination of the Furlong Road rail level crossing.

Benefits
A rail underpass beneath Main Road will:

  • reduce traffic congestion in and around the shopping precinct
  • improve safety for drivers, pedestrians and public transport users.

Current progress
A concept for a rail under road option was developed in June 2010 in consultation with Brimbank City Council, the Department of Transport and public transport operators.

Proposals for new projects are considered and evaluated on a statewide basis. Funding and timing of works to eliminate the Main Road level crossing will be considered in this context.

Involving the community
VicRoads has met with local businesses and residents whose properties may be affected by the St Albans level crossing proposal.

If funded, the proposal would go through a formal planning process and the broader community would also have an opportunity to make submissions as part of this process.
