The proposal is for a road connection between the Metropolitan Ring Road in Greensborough and the Eastern Freeway in Bulleen.
Tunnelling will be required to protect existing urban areas and to minimise environmental impact on the Banyule Flats and Yarra River, with further planning work still needed.
Detailed engineering investigations and community consultation are required before a final route alignment and design for the road connection are able to be determined.
- North East Link is estimated to carry around 100,000 vehicles a day, providing quicker and easier access for freight operators, particularly between the growing industrial areas around Ringwood, Dandenong, Campbellfield, the future freight-hub near Donnybrook and an upgraded Port of Hastings.
- North East link will form part of a major orbital road around Melbourne, serving growing employment hubs at employment localities, including Broadmeadows, Box Hill, Ringwood, Dandenong and Frankston.
- With Melbourne's north expected to grow to around one million people in 2026, North East Link will reduce reliance on Fitzsimons Lane, Heidelberg Road and Rosanna Road.
- North East Link will also enhance access to Melbourne Airport as well as popular regional and interstate destinations.
The North East Link is being reviewed as part of the Metropolitan Planning Strategy. It is anticipated that this strategy will be completed within two years.
The planning is in the initial phase. This phase involves determining the nature and scope of the studies to be undertaken. Preliminary consultations have been and will be undertaken with a range of stakeholder groups.
