The Victorian Coalition Government has nominated the ‘Mid-West 2’ as its preferred route for planning to be conducted for a second Murray River Bridge crossing for Echuca-Moama.
The ‘Mid-West 2’ corridor has the potential to provide a link between Warren Street, Echuca and the Cobb Highway, Moama along a corridor to the north of Echuca Cemetery and then crossing the Murray River downstream of the Echuca Caravan Park.
The ‘Mid-West 2’ is a variation of the Mid-West alignment, which was previously investigated in detail by VicRoads.

The Mid-West alignment was previously identified following reviews of previous planning studies, conducted in 2000/2001 by VicRoads and the then New South Wales Roads and Traffic Authority (RTA), to investigate potential options for a second river crossing.
Planning investigations for the Mid-West corridor were completed and a route alignment developed. A key outcome of the planning investigations included findings that the previously investigated Eastern, Central and Western options were not viable options for further consideration.
VicRoads and the Roads and Maritime Services (formerly RTA) are working closely with key stakeholders including an established Steering Committee with representation from the Campaspe and Murray Shire Councils, Yorta Yorta Nation Aboriginal Council and Moama Local Aboriginal Land Council on the planning study.
The planning study is investigating the feasibility of an alignment within the Mid-West 2 corridor. Specialist studies include:
- Traffic and economic analysis
- Flora and fauna
- Cultural heritage
- Hydrology (flooding)
- Noise
- Social impacts
- Land use
- Regional economy
- Landscape and visual assessment
- Geotechnical
These planning studies are expected to be completed by mid 2013.
The planning studies and associated activities for the Mid-West 2 signify an important initiative for the area. Consultation with the communities of Echuca and Moama will form a vital part of the planning process. Community members will be given the opportunity to provide comment to inform final outcomes.
This project page will be regularly updated with the latest planning news.
To assist VicRoads during the consultation process, a Community Consultation Group (CCG) has been recently established (September 2011).
The CCG is independently chaired and plays a role in facilitating project awareness in the community.
The CCG will inform VicRoads and the Steering Committee of community views, perspectives and issues, and provide opportunities for members to voice suggestions during the course of the planning study.
