Project overview
The Geelong Ring Road (Princes Freeway) was completed and opened through to the Princes Highway at Waurn Ponds in June 2009. A 2.5 kilometre extension including an overpass of the Princes Highway with a direct connection to Anglesea Road opened on 9 December 2011.

The Ring Road now provides a 26 kilometre freeway link between Corio and Waurn Ponds, along Geelong's western outskirts.

By using the Ring Road you can avoid more than 30 sets of traffic lights and significantly reduce your travel times.

In total more than $1.3 billion has been committed by the Victorian and Australian Governments for completed and future sections of the Geelong Ring Road, and the connecting Princes Highway duplication through to Winchelsea and Colac.

Anglesea Road connection (Section 4A)
This 2.5km section including an overpass to Anglesea Road, opened in December 2011, in time for the peak Christmas and holiday season traffic.

VicRoads' contractor Fulton Hogan, will continue to complete minor works in the area including at the roundabout on the Princes Highway.

Drivers are reminded to watch for changes in traffic conditions and obey all road work speed limits.

Princes Highway connection, Waurn Ponds (Section 4B)
In September 2010 work begun on a new 5km freeway-standard link to run west from Anglesea Road to the Princes Highway near Draytons Road.

Cut & Fill Pty Ltd is VicRoads' contractor for this section.

The road is under construction on land previously occupied by the Blue Circle quarry and will include:

  • two environmentally sustainable rest areas
  • a pedestrian underpass connecting the east and west sides of Anglesea Road.

As at December 2011, earthworks are well advanced with completion expected in 2013.

Surf Coast Highway connection (Section 4C)
An independent review has now been completed into the road alignment and consultation for the proposed arterial road connection through Mt Duneed from the Geelong Ring Road/Anglesea Road to the Surf Coast Highway at Grovedale.

The State Government has confirmed its support for the previously announced road alignment.

News Release - Geelong Ring Road 4C

VicRoads has resumed pre-construction activities for the planned two-lane arterial road to run adjacent to the Geelong-Warrnambool rail line, as part of the transport infrastructure needs to support the Armstrong Creek Urban Growth Area.

The road design will consider pedestian and bicycle movements, noise attenuation, landscaping and protection of native vegetation.
