Primary school road safety education

Road safety education at primary school generally focuses on passenger and pedestrian safety. Children begin to take more responsibility for keeping themselves safe on the road – such as remembering to use a seat belt, being safe on and around public transport, selecting safe places to cross roads and using the correct road crossing procedure. In Years 4 to 6, bicycle education also becomes a key focus. However, up until age 12 most children do not have the skills and experience to be safe in complex traffic without supervision.

Several primary school programs and resources have been developed. These include:

Kids On The Move
Bike Ed
Traffic Safety Storybooks
Travel On (METLINK)
Street Scene (RACV)

Kids On The Move
Kids On The Move is the new key Victorian traffic safety education resource for primary schools, which targets a minimum level of traffic safety education.

The resource comprises three books and a DVD - A child’s world of traffic, for parents/carers of Prep children.

Kids On The Move aims to:
  • assist school communities to understand their role in delivering essential traffic safety education;
  • provide a variety of teaching and learning activities and link these to the Victorian Essential Learning Standards;
  • identify additional enrichment activities for school communities to address local priorities; and
  • provide key road safety information to parents/carers, including activities they can undertake with their children in real traffic environments and to link traffic safety education activities to other programs that complement this area of learning.

Kids On The Move effectively replaces VicRoads RoadSmart program that many schools will have in their resource centre or library. RoadSmart remains a valuable resource and provides schools with additional traffic safety education activities to enrich their program and children’s learning.

How to get Kids On The Move
The Kids On The Move roll-out commenced in early 2007. To find out about the Kids On The Move information sessions in your area, contact your Regional Senior Program Officer. The contact details of the relevant officers can be found on the Traffic Safety Education website.
