Incident management systems

On the major metropolitan freeways there are Incident Management Systems installed that notify the Traffic Management Centre of unusual traffic conditions. These systems include detector stations that measure traffic flow, closed circuit television used to monitor and confirm problems, and variable message signs used to display information about the road conditions ahead.

If there is a need to close a major freeway or arterial road due to an incident, special diversion plans are used. These plans have been developed with emergency services, local government and VicRoads.
