Since 1994, travel time performance data has been collected by VicRoads on a regular basis for the Melbourne arterial road network to track changes over time. As part of the national Austroads program, all metropolitan freeways and a 15% sample of arterial roads are monitored.
The results are published annually in the Performance Monitoring Information Bulletin, showing the performance trends for average travel speed and delay by road type. The travel time variability of the network is also measured, along with the persons carried per lane and the tonnes of freight per lane by road type.
