The Edgars Road Improvement Project was a $13.2 million project involving the duplication and extension of Edgars Road to provide a four lane divided road between Kingsway Drive in Lalor and Cooper Street in Epping. The project was delivered in two stages. The first section between Kingsway Drive and Childs Road in Lalor, was completed in October 2003.
The second stage involved the construction of a new four lane divided road to extend Edgars Road from Childs Road to Cooper Street in Epping.
The Edgars Road extension was officially opened to traffic on Thursday 22 September 2005.
The Minister for Transport and local member for Thomastown, Peter Batchelor, was on site to cut the ribbon marking the opening. Hundreds of local residents joined the Minister at the opening event to celebrate the completion of this much anticipated new road.

The Edgars Road Improvement Project provides the following benefits:
- Improved road safety along Kingsway Drive and High Street due to a reduction in traffic volumes
- Avoidance of four sets of traffic lights along High Street (between Kingsway Drive and Cooper Street)
- Improved access to the Northern Hospital and to Epping Plaza
- Direct access for motorists on Edgars Road to Cooper Street and the Craigieburn Bypass

The Edgars Road Improvement Project includes:
- New traffic lights at the Edgars Road and Kingsway Drive intersection to replace the current roundabout
- New traffic lights installed at the Edgars Road and Cooper Street intersection
- Bicycle lanes in both directions
- Bus bays with provisions for people with disabilities. The bus bays will be installed as part of a planned bus link to Epping Plaza
