Flinders Street Overpass

 Works associated with the removal of the Flinders Street overpass are now complete. New tram tracks have been laid along sections of Flinders Street and new platform tram stops have been installed. On 21 December 2005 the Minister for Major Projects, John Lenders and Lord Mayor John So, attended the site to officially mark the completion of the project. Work on the project was carried out by contractor FRH Group and took 8 months to complete.

Features of the project
Removal of the Flinders Street overpass was completed in late December 2005, and included:

  • Removal of the Flinders Street overpass at King Street
  • A new signalised intersection at Flinders and King Streets, with provision for right-turn lanes
  • Installation of platform tram stops along Flinders Street at the intersections of Spencer, King and Market Streets, to provide safer and easier passenger access to trams.

Benefits of the project
Benefits of removing the overpass include:

  • Stimulating new growth and investment in the south-western part of the CBD and in particular, the Melbourne Aquarium.
  • Improving links to existing destinations on both sides of the Yarra River.
  • Improving pedestrian facilities, making it easier and more accessible to get to and across the River.
  • Improving public safety through a more open, planned and visually enhanced environment.
  • Improving access to public transport along the western end of Flinders Street.
  • Improving car access to the CBD with the provision of right-turn lanes on the approaches to the new Flinders/King intersection.

Public Transport Services

Services for tram routes 48, 70 and 75 returned to normal in late November 2005. The City Circle Tram has also resumed its usual route along Flinders Street and Spring Street.
