The State Government has committed $33 million to provide a SmartBus service between Rowville and Caulfield. As part of the project, a 6.5km secton of Wellington Road between Springvale Road and Stud Road is being widened to three lanes in each direction. Major intersections along on the SmartBus route have been improved to give buses priority.
Roadworks are scheduled for completion in mid 2008.
The project is being delivered in partnership between VicRoads and the Department of Transport.
The Wellington Road SmartBus provides a new limited stop express service from the Stud Park Shopping Centre in Rowville to the Caulfield Railway Station. Major stops along the route include:
- New residential development at the former AFL Waverley Park site
- Monash University Clayton and Caulfield campuses
- Huntingdale Railway Station
- Oakleigh Railway Station
- Chadstone Shopping Centre
Major intersection improvements will give buses priority and provide a 'head-start' over other traffic with exclusive bus lanes on intersection approaches and signals to provide an 'early green light'.
Wellington Road between Springvale Road and Stud Road is being widened to three lanes each way (excluding the bridge over the Monash Freeway). An off-road bicycle path is included along the route.
- Bus stops are being upgraded to give easier access for disabled patrons
- Bus stop totem pole signs will have timetable and route map information
- High use bus stops will have electronic ‘real-time’ information signs giving current advice on the next bus, and connecting tram or train services. An audio unit will also give this information
- Coloured concrete standing areas distinguish SmartBus stops from other bus service stops
- Computer and communications technology will monitor bus operations to keep passengers informed of bus arrival times.
The Wellington Road SmartBus project will provide:
- A more efficient and direct bus service from Rowville to Caulfied, with improved traffic flow and less congestion
- Consistent road capacity along Wellington Road between Springvale Road and Stud Road
- Safer facilities for cyclists along Wellington Road
- Better access for disabled bus patrons
- Increased frequency and reliability of bus services
- Real time information for patrons at bus stops
- Intelligent vehicle tracking to control traffic lights and assist on-time bus services
