Member for Yuroke, Liz Beattie, recently celebrated the completion of the Mickleham Road duplication project and declared the upgrade at Greenvale a carbon-neutral road construction project.
During an inspection of the completed works on 12 February, Ms Beattie announced this new initiative, which aims to reduce the impact of road construction activities on the environment.
VicRoads has used the $13.3 million Mickleham Road duplication as a pilot project to measure the carbon footprint of road construction, and identify ways to potentially reduce and offset the carbon emissions from the roadworks.
The greenhouse emissions generated by the project will be offset by planting 7,463 trees in Victoria’s North West. This equates to offsetting around 40 million black balloons.
This important greenhouse initiative for Mickleham Road has been achieved with the assistance and input of works contractor BMD Major Projects Pty Ltd.
More information about this initiative is available on the greenhouse page of VicRoads website.
This $16.3 million State Government funded project extends the duplication of Mickleham Road for 2.4km north from Barrymore Road to Somerton Road at Greenvale, providing two lanes in each direction. It builds on the benefits of duplication works completed in April 2007 south of Barrymore Road to Allanbrae Terrace at Attwood.

The project was officially opened by Ms Liz Beattie, Member for Yuroke on 12 February 2008.
The opening of all four lanes has provided immediate benefits to motorists by improving traffic flow and road safety.
Preliminary design plans were displayed for community feedback in September 2006.
VicRoads has considered these comments in refining the project plans.
