The Somerton Road Duplication Project is a $33.7 million project funded by the State Government as part of its $163.6 million Outer Metropolitan Roads package. The works will duplicate 1.7km of the existing road to provide two lanes in each direction between the Hume Highway and Reservoir Drive, Somerton.
The project includes the construction of a new bridge over the Melbourne - Sydney railway line to remove the railway level crossing.
Construction commenced on the project in August 2006 and was completed in December 2007.
The Somerton Road Duplication Project includes:
- New traffic lights at the Union Road/Somerton Road and Austrak/Somerton Road intersections
- Bicycle lanes in both directions
- Overpass at the railway line
- Street lighting and landscaping
- Space for a third lane in each direction to be built in the future when required
The Somerton Road Duplication Project provides the following benefits:
- Reduced traffic delays along this key freight and public transport route
- Minimised queuing and congestion along Somerton Road
- Improved safety for all road users
- Improved safety with an overpass of the railway crossing for motorists, cyclists and pedestrians
- Improved freight access into Austrak Development and other local industries
The Somerton Road duplication project was opened on 18 December 2007 by the Premier and Member for Broadmeadows, the Hon John Brumby.
The opening of all four lanes has provided immediate benefits to motorists by improving traffic flow and road safety, with vehicles no longer having to negotiate the railway level crossing.
