Vineyard Road duplication, Sunbury

Project overview

A $25 million State Government funded project to duplicate Vineyard Road providing two lanes in each direction for 3km between Obeid Drive and Mitchells Lane, Sunbury. Construction commenced in May 2008 and completion is expected by mid 2010, with stages opening progressively before this time.

Features

  • Two traffic lanes each way between Obeid Drive and Mitchells Lane
  • Service roads for homes and business properties between Mitchells Lane and McDougall Road
  • New traffic signals at the Mitchells Lane/Vineyard Road intersection
  • Upgrading of the McDougall Road traffic signals
  • A shared user path on the west side

Benefits

  • Improved traffic flow on Vineyard Road
  • Reduced delays during peak hour
  • Improved access between the Sunbury township and the Calder Freeway for the businesses, local residents and visitors
  • Improved access conditions between McDougall Road and Mitchells Lane
  • Safer conditions for all road users including cyclists and pedestrians

Current progress and traffic impacts
The completion date for the Vineyard Road project has been revised to mid 2010 due to service relocation delays, difficulties excavating the hill area and poor weather over recent months. VicRoads and Winslow Projects are working together to complete the works by the earliest possible date, with some sections opening before the project's completion.

Urban Zone
With the traffic signals switched on at the intersection of Vineyard Road and Mitchells Lane since August 2009, the safety and amenity for both drivers and local businesses has vastly improved.

Please note the following changes to traffic near McDougall Road from mid November:

  • The permanent traffic signals at the intersection of McDougall Road and Vineyard Road will be switched on
  • Calder Freeway-bound traffic will be shifted onto the new southbound lanes near the McDougall Road intersection
  • The temporary u-turn at the industrial service road exit will close in line with the final design and safety standards agreed for this project. The signalised McDougall Road intersection will provide for all turns, including u-turns

A 40 km/h roadwork speed limit will continue to apply during this time to ensure the safety of workers and road users. Please take care and observe speed limits within the construction zone.

Rural Zone

Much of the retaining wall on the western side of the hill has now been installed. The panels will be painted in colours symbolic of Sunbury's wine growing history. Excavation of the eastern half of the hill will take place once traffic has been shifted onto the new northbound lanes through the hill, which is expected to take place at the end of November.

Construction update

Community consultation
VicRoads welcomes input and feedback from the local community with ongoing consultation involving stakeholders including Hume Council, residents, community groups, special interest groups and businesses.

In 2007 design plans were displayed at venues in Sunbury providing the opportunity view proposals, ask questions and provide feedback which was considered in finalising the road layout.

A Community Consultation Group (CCG) meets every six weeks to provide a resident and business perspective on the works, to share information and to ensure that public issues and concerns are consistently understood and considered. Vineyard Road CCG Members [Word, 241 KB]
