Northern suburbs projects

Significant arterial road and freeway improvements planned, underway or recently completed in Melbourne's northern suburbs include: 

Hume Freeway - Donnybrook Road interchange
The $39 million Donnybrook Road Interchange  will eliminate the existing intersection on the  Hume Freeway at Kalkallo. The $39 project is funded by the Australian Government under the AusLink National Project program.

Construction start: December 2007    Completion: mid 2009 

Mickleham Road duplication, Greenvale 
A $16.3 million State Government funded project extending the duplication of Mickleham Road - Barrymore Road to Somerton Road, Greenvale.

Construction start: early 2007    Completed: February 2008
Length of works: 2.4 km


Plenty Road duplication, Mill Park 
The Plenty Road Duplication Project is a $32 million State Government funded project to extend the duplication from Centenary Drive, Mill Park to Gordons Road, South Morang.

Construction start: May 2006    Completed: December 2007 


Somerton Road duplication, Somerton 
The Somerton Road Duplication Project is a $33.7 million State Government funded project to extend the duplication of Somerton Road providing two lanes each way between the Hume Highway and Reservoir Drive, with a new road overpass to eliminate the railway level crossing at Roxburgh Park.

Construction start: August 2006     Completed: December 2007
Length of works: 1.7km

Tullamarine - Calder Freeway interchange, Essendon North 
A $150 million upgrading of the Tullamarine-Calder Freeway interchange to reduce congestion and improve safety at one of Melbourne's worst traffic bottlenecks and accident blackspots. New freeway lanes and access ramps were constructed on land around the south-west corner of Essendon Airport between English Street and Bulla Road. 

Construction start: October 2005    Completion: June 2007
Length of works: 2 km 

Vineyard Road duplication, Sunbury
The Vineyard Road Duplication Project is a $25 million project funded by the State Government to duplicate the existing road and provide two lanes each way between Obeid Drive and Mitchells Lane, Sunbury.

Construction start: May 2008    Completion date: late 2009
Length of works: 3 km
