Breakwater Road is an important east-west arterial route, carrying over 18,000 vehicles per day.
VicRoads is proposing to realign Breakwater Road to provide a new bridge connection across the Barwon River to improve east - west traffic flows in Geelong and replace the existing Barwon River bridge crossing which is flood prone and height restricted beneath the Geelong - Warrnambool rail line bridge.
VicRoads has prepared Amendment C117 to the Greater Geelong Planning Scheme which will provide for a realignment of Breakwater Road known as Option 1.
The Minister for Planning will be appointing an Advisory Committee to assess the overall merits of the other Breakwater Road realignment options (known as Options 2 & 3). The Advisory Committee will consider the potential environmental, social, cultural and economic effects and relevant strategic planning issues and recommend a preferred option to the Minister.
