Colac Lavers Hill Road is an important arterial road for tourists, commuter and business travel providing a link between the Princes Highway West to the Great Ocean Road, the coastal townships of Apollo Bay, Princetown and Port Campbell and the Otway Fly. It is also a key route for the timber and agricultural industries, and school buses servicing rural communities and is a popular motorcycle route.
The Colac Lavers Hill Road Improvement Project includes pavement repairs, additional overtaking opportunities and shoulder sealing along the entire length of the road, from Elliminyt to Lavers Hill. The project will result in a sealed 8-metre two-way road pavement. The Australian and Victorian Governments are funding partners for the project, with the works estimated to cost $15 million.
Shoulder construction works commenced in November 2008.
The following benefits have been identified for motorists:
- An 8.0m wide sealed road suitable for local and tourist traffic, as well as the transport industry
- Pavement rehabilitation at two locations between Eliminyt and Gellibrand
- Three slow vehicle turnouts to enable overtaking of slow vehicles in hilly areas
Road Safety measures to be introduced along the route include:
- Shoulder Sealing throughout the length of the road
- 'Delineation’ improvements such as centreline and edgelines to assist drivers in periods of poor weather or fog
- Kerb and channel and sub-surface drains to maximise the available pavement width and improve slope stability at various locations
- A Speed Limit review south of Gellibrand to Lavers Hill.
Motorists are requested to observe road works speed limits along Colac Lavers Hill Road during the construction works
