Features and benefits
The Ring Road will improve safety and accessibility, as well as encourage further tourism to Geelong, the Surf Coast and south western Victoria.  On completion of Sections 1 and 2, drivers can avoid up to 16 sets of traffic lights and enjoy significant travel time savings.

In addition to the four-lane freeway, a shared bicycle and pedestrian path will be constructed from Broderick Road, Corio to Church Street, Hamlyn Heights.

Architecturally-designed noise walls constructed from weathering steel will feature at specific locations along the Ring Road along with significant landscaping which includes thousands of native and indigenous trees, shrubs and grasses.

Road safety features incorporated within the project include emergency stopping lanes, median safety barriers and Help PHones linked to VicRoads Traffic Management Centre.

Managing the environment
Project Environmental Protection Strategies
Project Environmental Protection Strategies (PEPS) were developed for Sections 1 and 2,  identifying the potential benefits and impacts, and proposed environmental protection and mitigation measures.

Issues considered included the potential effects of the new road on flora, fauna and cultural heritage, dust, noise and related social impacts on neighbouring communities.

The PEPS was placed on public exhibition for comment in July 2005 and approved by Department of Sustainability and Environment (DSE) following a review of submissions from the community and stakeholders, and identification of actions to address environmental concerns.
