Features and benefits
The Ring Road from Fyansford to Waurn Ponds is being constructed as a four-lane freeway, capable of being upgraded to six lanes in future. It includes 7.5 kilometres of road and bridge works with interchanges at the Hamilton Highway, Barrabool Road and the Princes Highway; overpasses at Wandana Drive and Thornhill Road/Pigdons Road; and 115 metre-long twin bridges spanning the Barwon River.
The Ring Road is expected to carry approximately 25,000 vehicles per day, with motorists avoiding up to 29 sets of traffic lights and enjoying significant travel time savings.
Architecturally designed noise walls, built from weathering steel, will be complemented by significant landscaping. Habitat for local wildlife will be provided by the inclusion of thousands of native and indigenous trees, shrubs and grasses.

VicRoads and Abigroup will work together to ensure traffic impacts during construction are minimised.
Permanent road closures for Section 3 of the Ring Road will include:

Managing the environment
The Geelong Ring Road EES/PSA
An Environment Effects Statement (EES) and associated Planning Scheme Amendment (PSA) for Section 3 was prepared and released for public exhibition in August 2005.
The EES examined in detail alternative route alignments, south of the Hamilton Highway, Fyansford to the Princes Highway, Waurn Ponds. The proposed alignment options were measured against environmental, social and economic objectives developed in consultation with stakeholders, and through independent consultant investigations.
Benefits and impacts were carefully assessed through studies such as:
- air, noise and water
- flora and fauna
- cultural heritage
- landscape and visual impact
- roads and traffic
- social impact
