The Nagambie Bypass is the next stage in the progressive upgrading of the Goulburn Valley Highway through north-central Victoria.
This vital transport route connects the rich fruit and vegetable growing industries in the Goulburn Valley with Melbourne, and also forms part of the national highway link between Melbourne and Brisbane.
The Bypass will extend the four lane freeway route for 17km to the east of Nagambie between Mitchellstown Road and Weir Road. When completed, drivers will be able to travel on a freeway-standard road for 155km from Melbourne to south of Shepparton.
Project funding is provided under the Australian Government's Nation Building Economic Stimulus Plan and the State Government's Victorian Transport Plan.
Construction will commence in late 2009 with the Bypass due for completion in late 2012.
The project will be constructed in two sections:
- Northern duplication - a 3.5 km duplication of the existing highway north of Nagambie
- Main bypass - a new 13.5 km freeway-standard deviation to the east of the town.
Features
The current project scope includes:
- a freeway bypass with two lanes each way to the east of Nagambie township
- duplication of the existing highway between Kirwans Bridge-Longwood Road and Weir Road with associated local access road improvements
- full diamond interchanges at Mitchellstown Road and Kirwans Bridge Road with bridges over the Bypass at these locations, and freeway ramps giving access in all directions
- an overpass of Nagambie-Locksley Road and an underpass at Racecourse Road
- upgrades of Racecourse Road, McDonalds Road and Nagambie-Locksley Road in certain sections
When completed the Nagambie Bypass is will provide:
- quicker travel times with safer conditions for highway drivers and local people
- more efficient freight movement with lower transport costs for produce shipped from the Goulburn Valley to Melbourne, our ports and interstate
- easier access for residents and visitors to Nagambie township
- improved amenity within the town with less traffic conflict between local drivers, trucks and through traffic
- reduced traffic noise and fumes within the town centre and local neighbourhoods
A contract for the northern section duplication is due to be awarded with construction to start in late 2009.
The contract for the main bypass works will be awarded in early 2010 with construction to commence by mid-2010.
VicRoads will inform, involve and consult with the local community during the final planning and construction phases to ensure the Bypass provides maximum benefits to locals, visitors and other road users. This will be done through information forums, open days, a project website and information bulletins.
