The Princes Highway West is the key east-west route in south western Victoria. It provides a strategic link between Melbourne and the South Australian border, and beyond to Adelaide.
The project proposes to duplicate the Princes Highway to an 'M' standard four lane divided highway between Waurn Ponds and Winchelsea.
Project strategy objectives include:
- improve the safety and reliability of this vital stretch of rural highway
- improve the freight viability of an important east-west link
- enhance amenity and access to south west tourist destinations
- improve access to a range of community services and activities
- encourage state and regional development by improving economic opportunities
- improve access to ports and markets for industry
The Australian Government has committed $110 million through the Nation Building Program with the Victorian Government providing $110 million as part of the Victorian Transport Plan.
In January 2009 the Princes Highway between Winchelsea and Colac was added to the national network, making it eligible for future funding. To date, no funds have been committed to duplicate the Princes Highway west of Winchelsea.
