Cranbourne-Frankston Road duplication, Cranbourne South

Project overview
A $30 million State Government funded project to duplicate Cranbourne-Frankston Road south between Hall Road to the Western Port Highway. This 3.5 km section is the final stage in providing a fully divided road link between Cranbourne and Frankston.

Features

  • Two lanes each way linking with adjacent divided road sections at the Western Port Highway and at Hall Road
  • A roundabout at Pearcedale Road
  • Right-turn lanes in the centre median into local streets
  • A combination of shared user paths, kerbside bicycle lanes and sealed shoulders to cater for cyclists.

Benefits
It builds on the benefits of adjacent duplication works completed in 2008 along Sladen Street Cranbourne, and on the Cranbourne-Frankston Road between the Western Port Highway and Centre Road.

The duplication will also provide:

  • improved traffic flow and safer driving conditions
  • better and safer access to local facilities
  • safer conditions for cyclists.

Current progress and traffic impacts
Works commenced in January 2009 and are scheduled for completed by mid 2010.

AsFebruary 2009 - looking north along Cranbourne-Frankston Road at June 2009:

  • construction of a retaining wall between Stanhill Drive and Woodlands Road on the Frankston-bound lanes is complete with barriers along wall to be built
  • construction of the Frankston-bound lanes are underway.
  • construction of the roundabout at Pearcedale Road/Ballarto Road intersection has commenced
  • relocation of watermains, gas pipelines and telecommunications cables is continuing

Temporary road closure
To construct the new road safely, temporary closure of the entry/exit of Woodlands Road from Cranbourne-Frankston Road is required until early July 2009. Alternative routes and detour signs are in place. Residents wanting to access Cranbourne-Frankston Road are encouraged to use Stanhill Drive or Chevron Avenue.

Reduced speed limits
A 60km/h roadworks speed limit is in place in the vicinity of Cranbourne-Frankston Road work zones. VicRoads and BMD Contractors remind motorists to take care when approaching the construction area and observe reduced speed limits.

Managing the environment
An environmental management plan has been developed. VicRoads is working with the Department of Sustainability and Environment and Council, to ensure that all environment protection requirements, including the protection of native vegetation, are met. Environmental investigations have been completed for cultural heritage, flora and fauna.

Involving the community
Feedback from local residents, businesses, schools and community groups is welcomed. Members of the community are invited to visit the VicRoads project office to discuss project matters and view development plans.
