When completed in late 2010, the George Street Bridge will create a new gateway into central Dandenong, connecting people and businesses on either side of the rail line.
The project will see George Street extended and linked with the newly-aligned Cheltenham Road, by constructing a bridge over the railway line and Foster Street.
The $29.5 million George Street Bridge project is part of the Victorian Government's
Revitalising Central Dandenong initiative, a partnership between VicUrban and the City of Greater Dandenong aimed at rejuvenating the city centre.
- Two-way road for drivers
- Shared bicycle and pedestrian path on the station side, with a pedestrian path on the other side
- Artwork on the bridge that reflects the local area history
- Street lighting
- Provides an alternative route for vehicles into central Dandenong
- Reduces congestion on other main roads
- Links Dandenong's main shopping precinct with the new Metro Village 3175 residential development, located off Cheltenham Road
Current progress and traffic impacts
VicRoads contractor for the bridgeworks is Cut and Fill Pty Ltd.
- Sword Street and Abbott Street are closed for the duration of works and will become permanent no-through roads once the bridge is completed
- George Street is closed between Cadle and Swords Streets and will reopen once the bridge is completed. George Street remains open between Cadle and Robinson Streets and is accessible via these roads
- Temporary no-stopping restrictions apply for a section of Foster Street/Railway Parade, on the railway side, for the duration of works
Construction is continuing on the retaining walls on the northern approach to the new bridge. Works have started on the southern retaining wall (Cheltenham Road side). Piling works for the bridge foundations will be completed later this year.
Bridgeworks will cause minimal disruption to train commuters and drivers. At times drivers may need to use alternative routes to avoid delays, with advance notice provided prior to any traffic changes.
VicRoads has strict guidelines to control noise and pollution and will work with the City of Greater Dandenong, VicUrban and the community to manage environmental impacts during construction.
