Pound Road upgrade, Dandenong South

Project Overview
A $36.8 million State Government funded project to upgrade Pound Road between the South Gippsland Freeway and the South Gippsland Highway in Dandenong South.

Over 30,000 vehicles pass over the Pound Road overpass every day, including 4000 heavy freight vehicles. Pound Road is a key route that drivers use to get to and from South Gippsland, Dandenong South and Hallam. These areas continue to expand, putting increased demand on the road and public transport.

This upgrade will cater for the current and proposed expansion of the Dandenong South industrial area and  will reduce the cost of freight movements in and around Dandenong, by reducing traffic delays on this important section of the road network.

Features
  • Major widening of the Pound Road bridge over the South Gippsland Freeway
  • Additional lanes, resulting in a total of three westbound, two eastbound and two right turn lanes onto the South Gippsland Freeway
  • Traffic signals at the Pound Road/South Gippsland Highway intersection
  • Additional lanes on the freeway off ramp
  • Traffic signals on the freeway on ramp
  • Improvements to the Abbotts Road/South Gippsland Highway intersection including extra turn lanes

Traffic signals will also be installed at the Pound Road/Vanessa Drive intersection.

Benefits
  • Improved access to the key industrial and residential areas
  • Improved public transport and freight access
  • Safer driving conditions
  • Reduced traffic delays
