Current progress and traffic impacts
BMD Pty Ltd is VicRoads contractor for the works which commenced in June 2008 and are scheduled for completion by late 2009.

Construction progress:
As at January 2009 works are progressing well. Achievements to date include:

  • Completion of the road pavement for the westbound carriageway.
  • Earthworks on the northern side between Woodbine Road and South Gippsland Highway, and west of South Gippsland Highway to Gray Street
  • Bus stop relocation
  • Completion of new access arrangements from South Gippsland Highway to the Thompson Parkway Shopping Centre and Mobil service station.

Traffic Switch:
Two way traffic is now running on the westbound carriageway between Narre Warren-Cranbourne Road and Woodbine Road, while construction of the eastbound lanes are completed.

The exit/entry of Courtney Avenue, Lansell Drive and Rapallo Way from Thompson Road is temporarily closed for approximately three months to ensure safe and efficient reconstruction of the existing road.

Signed detour routes are operating while these road closures are in place.

Speed Limits
Roadworks speed limits are operating along Thompson Road during construction periods for the safety of workers and all road users. VicRoads and BMD Constructions ask motorists to drive carefully and obey reduced speed limits when travelling through work zones.

Managing the environment

VicRoads has developed and implemented a Project Environment Protection Strategy to ensure that the works have minimal impact on the local environment. The project team has also completed environmental studies including flora and fauna surveys and cultural heritage assessments.

Involving the community
VicRoads held a community information session in July 2007 to provide local residents and business owners with the opportunity to view and provide feedback on concept plans.

In August 2008, a second community information session was held to discuss intended minor changes west of the South Gippsland Highway to pedestrian crossing and access arrangements at Gray Street and Lonsdale Crescent. Following community feedback VicRoads is investigating issues raised and is considering available options.

VicRoads will provide regular updates to keep the local community aware of progress. Members of the community are invited to visit the project office to discuss project matters and view development plans.
