Thompson Road duplication, Carrum Downs

Project Overview
The Thompson Road duplication at Carrum Downs is a $30.5 million State Government funded project extending 4.2 km from the Mornington Peninsula Freeway to Dandenong-Frankston Road. The upgrade will improve road safety and mobility for residents and motorists, and improve access to Eastlink and adjacent residential and commercial areas.

Features

  • Two lanes in each direction from east of the Mornington Peninsula Freeway to Eastlink
  • Three lanes in each direction between Eastlink and Dandenong-Frankston Road.
  • Right turn lanes in centre medians to some local streets.
  • Off-road shared user path between EastLink and Dandenong-Frankston Road.

Benefits

  • Improved traffic flow and travel times
  • Safer driving conditions
  • Better and safer local access
  • Improved traffic movements to accommodate the opening of EastLink
  • Provides improved access to Eastlink for freight operators  and commuters.

Current progress and traffic impacts
Works on the Thompson Road duplication in Carrum Downs commenced in September 2008. The first stage works were completed in April 2009 providing three lanes each way between Eastlink and Dandenong-Frankston Road, and an upgraded three-lane roundabout at the Thompson Road/Dandenong-Frankston Road intersection.

Due to cool and wet weather, road surfacing by VicRoads contractor, BMD Constructions has been suspended. Works will recommence in the warmer months. Road conditions will be monitored to maintain a safe traffic environment while works are suspended.

A  60 km/h roadworks speed limit now applies along Thompson Road between the Mornington Peninsula Freeway and Learmonth Road. The speed limit will be lifted to 90 km/h at the completion of works.

Managing the environment
VicRoads will ensure that the environmental aspects of the project are managed effectively. An environmental management plan has been developed, and VicRoads works with the Department of Sustainability and Environment (DSE) and Council to ensure that environment protection requirements are met.

Involving the community
VicRoads thanks motorists and residents for their patience while construction works are underway. Project updates will continue to be provided to keep the local community informed. Feedback from residents, drivers, businesses and community groups is welcomed. Community members are invited to visit VicRoads project office to discuss project matters and view development plans.
