Western suburbs projects

Significant arterial road and freeway improvements planned, underway or recently completed in Melbourne's western suburbs include:

Calder Freeway/Kings Road interchange & duplication, Taylors Lakes
A $62 million project to extend and duplicate Kings Road north of the Melton Highway at Taylors Lakes and connect through to the Calder Freeway via a new interchange.

Construction start: late 2010  Completion:  mid 2012 
Length of works: 1km

Deer Park Bypass 
A $331 million freeway-standard connection between the Western Ring Road at Sunshine West and the Western Freeway at Caroline Springs.

Construction started: August 2006    Completed: April 2009
Length of works 9.3km

Kororoit Creek Road duplication, Altona
A $48.5 million State Government funded project to duplicate  Kororoit Creek Road between Grieve Parade and Millers Road, Altona including elimination of the existing level crossing with a new bridge will carry Kororoit Creek Road over the rail line.

Construction start: early 2010     Completion: late 2011
Length of works: 2.1km

Truck Action Plan
The Victorian Government will implement a two-stage truck action plan to significantly reduce the number of trucks using residential streets in Melbourne’s inner west. The first stage involves the construction of new ramps connecting the West Gate Freeway and Hyde Street, enhancing connectivity to the Port of Melbourne. These ramps will face west to reduce pressure on the West Gate Bridge. Hyde and Whitehall Streets will be upgraded and Shepherd Bridge strengthened to ensure appropriate access for heavy vehicles.

Taylors Road Project, St Albans
A $54 million State Government funded project to separate road and rail traffic with a road underpass of the Sydenham Rail line.

Construction start: 2007   Completed: September  2008

Western Highway realignment - Melton to Bacchus Marsh
A $200 million project to provide a new freeway connection south of the existing route from Harkness Road, Melton West to east of Bacchus Marsh to avoid the steep hills and tight curves at Anthonys Cutting.

Construction start: early 2010   Completion: 2012
Length of works: 5km

M80 Ring Road upgrade - Laverton North to Greensborough
A $2.25 billion project to widen and upgrade the Western and Metropolitan Ring Roads to reduce congestion and improve safety along the 38km freeway route from the Princes Freeway at Laverton North to the Greensborough Highway at Greensborough.  Works will be progressively completed and opened in stages.

Construction start: 2009  

West Gate Freeway/Bridge
The West Gate Bridge is being strengthened and upgraded as part of the $1.39 billion M1 Upgrade to carry five lanes each way. Permanent suicide prevention barriers are also being installed on the bridge.

The West Gate Freeway is being upgraded with extra lanes, reconfigured access ramps and an electronic lane management system to improve safety and ease congestion.

Construction start: early 2008   Completion: 2011
