VicRoads has a responsibility to those driving on Victorian arterial roads and freeways. Measures have been taken to ensure that drivers are not inconvenienced and are safe while travelling on our roads. Road signs and other road furniture have all been designed to help drivers.
This section provides important information for Victorian road users, as well as interstate and international drivers. Information that can be found in this section includes:
- Road Signs in Victoria. The types of signs road users are likely to face on Victorian roads. Drivers need to be aware of the many signs on the road and be prepared to follow them. Drivers must also understand the road rules for each situation they face.
- Victoria's Route Number Signs. The system of route numbers used on Arterial Roads and Freeways in Victoria to assist navigation. Route numbers are preceded by the letters M, A, B, and C.
- Slow Vehicle Turnouts. How road users should utilise slow vehicle turnouts and what they are. These slow vehicle turnouts are located on major tourist roads such as the Great Ocean Road, Great Alpine Road and the Murray Valley Highway.
- Using freeway help phones.These help phones are positioned along Victorian freeways and are provided for drivers to report breakdowns and roadside hazards.
- Driving in Rural Victoria. Rural areas can be difficult to drive in as they may be unfamiliar to drivers. The “Drivers’ Guide to Rural Victoria” is a very useful map for drivers planning on travelling throughout the state.
- Sign Line. How drivers can help make sure signs are clearly visible to drivers and are not obstructed by other objects or vegetation. Drivers can call 13 11 71 to report these hazards.
