Road rules exist to help keep our roads safer for all road users. When caught, road users who choose to disregard these rules may receive fines or other penalties.
In October 2009, the Victorian Government announced that higher fines and penalties will be introduced for those caught breaching some traffic laws. The increased penalties will be effective as of November 2009 and are the result of a review of more than 400 traffic infringement and court fines.
The increased penalties target extremely dangerous behaviours which are known contributors to fatalities on Victoria’s roads.
To view the penalties that will come into effect as of November 2009 visit the Victorian Legislation and Parliamentary Documents website, select 'Victorian Statute Book', then 'List Statutory Rules by Title', then '2009', scroll down and select 'Road Safety (General) Regulations 2009'. The various penalties are outlined in Schedule 7 of those regulations.
