Questions about road rules

Answers to common questions about driving in Victoria. For more information see: Victoria’s Road Rules.

When entering a freeway using the on-ramp, who is required to give way?

  • The driver crossing the dotted white continuity line across the on-ramp when entering the freeway is technically "changing lanes", so is required to give way to the vehicles which are already travelling on the freeway.

When two lines of traffic merge, who is required to give way?

  • If no lines are marked to assign priority to either line of traffic, then a driver must give way to any vehicle with any part ahead of the driver's vehicle. In practice this works like a "zip", by drivers in each line taking turns.

Which vehicles must a driver give way to when entering a roundabout?

  • Any vehicle in the roundabout and any tram entering or approaching the roundabout.

When turning at an intersection (not including a roundabout), is a driver required to give way to pedestrians?

  • Yes, the driver must give way to any pedestrians crossing the road the driver is turning into, also to any pedestrian on a slip lane, when turning using a slip lane.

Are drivers required to give way to pedestrians at roundabouts?

  • Unless there are specific crossings provided, there is no requirement for vehicles to give way to pedestrians at roundabouts.

Who is a U-turning driver required to give way to?

  • Since U turns are a dangerous manoeuvre, a driver undertaking a U-turn is required to give way to everyone - to all vehicles and all pedestrians.

When driving on a freeway with three lanes, when is a driver permitted to drive in the right lane?

  • A driver must keep out of the right lane on any multi-lane road with a speed limit over 80 km/h, unless the driver is overtaking, turning right, or if the traffic is congested.
