New arrivals and disadvantaged communities

Best practice programs
Best practice programs to assist new migrants/arrivals in becoming safe and compliant road users include:
  • building the program Getting on the road: a guide for new migrants
  • utilising the Community Car Connection resource (new arrival road safety awareness program)
  • building a program around keeping children safe in cars
  • building a program to improve pedestrian safety
  • where appropriate, working with the local L2P provider to enrich an existing L2P program to cover the needs of young new arrivals, where the program does not currently address these needs
  • utilising other programs such as the Mission Australia Ignition Plus program to support people with low level literacy to gain their learner permit.

Research
The Transport Accident Commission (TAC) and the Royal Automobile Club of Victoria (RACV) commissioned research to develop an understanding of the road safety issues and experiences of new migrants in the lead up to and following licensing as a Victorian driver, including participation in locally developed programs.

Outcomes of the research indicate that the main issues for new migrants are mobility and licensing  The research also confirmed that those from less motorised societies  may be a greater risk of crashing or receiving infringements.

Community Road Safety Grants Program
The TAC’s Community Road Safety Grants Program will continue to consider any project that can demonstrate a local road safety issue through data and evidence and propose a program to address the issue.
