Road rules exist to help keep our roads safer for all road users. Penalties apply to those caught breaking the rules. Penalties may include monetary fines, loss of your learner permit or licence, or you may be taken to court. Many offences also attract demerit points. In serious cases prison sentences may be imposed.
Fines are referred to as penalty units in the road rules. See Automatic indexation of fees and penalties for information.
Demerit points are recorded against your driver licence or learner permit when you commit certain traffic offences anywhere in Australia. See Demerit points or Demerit point offences for information.
See Getting your licence back for information.
See Drink driving penalties for information.
See Drug driving penalties for information.
Victoria Police is authorised to impound or immobilise vehicles for hoon related offences or driving while disqualified. See Vehicle Impoundment for information.
Unpaid fines if not resolved may result in suspension of your licence or registration. See Penalties for unpaid fines for information.
In some cases, a court may impose a jail term as well as a monetary fine.
