The rules outlined below are an overview, please refer to the rule references for more details.
A railway level crossing is where a road and a railway meet. A level crossing may also have level crossing signs and/or yellow criss-cross lines painted on the road.
You must obey stop or give way signs at level crossings.
If there is traffic stopped on the other side of the railway crossing, you must not enter the crossing unless there is room for your vehicle on the other side. You must not stop on an area painted with yellow criss-cross lines.
Where there are gates, booms, or flashing lights at railway level crossings, you must not cross until signals have stopped flashing and the gates or booms are fully open. If there are no gates, booms or flashing lights follow the other signs.
As a pedestrian you must not cross the train tracks at a level crossing unless you use the pedestrian facility. If there is no pedestrian facility, you must cross within 20 metres of the level crossing. A pedestrian must not cross at a level crossing if warning lights are flashing or warning bells are ringing, a gate, boom or barrier is closing or a train is approaching or entering the crossing.
