VicRoads works in collaboration with other partners to provide a range of road safety education (RSE) resources and programs to prepare children and young people to become safe and independent road and transport users.
Each of the partners is represented on the Victorian RSE Reference Group, the coordinating body for RSE in Victoria. The RSE Reference Group developed the Traffic Safety Education: Directions and Action Plan 2008-2010 Victoria which recommends a minimum (core) level of road safety education to be provided to children and young people.
The core RSE program in early childhood, primary and secondary schools is complemented by an extensive range of other resources which enrich children’s and young people’s learning.
In this section:
- Early childhood: There is evidence that children can start learning about using the road system from a very early age. This can lead to the development of safer behaviours in later life.
- Primary schools: Prep to year 2 is a key time to deliver RSE as children’s exposure to the road network as pedestrians increases. Years 5 and 6 is another key time as young people begin to develop greater independence as road users.
- Secondary schools: Year 10 is a key time as young people begin to learn to drive and become even more independent road users.
- Safe to school: Traffic and parking problems around schools are significant issues for many schools and local councils. The materials in this section have been designed to help improve safety at school drop off and pick up times.
