Tow trucks can drive in emergency stopping lanes on freeways to quickly reach an accident or disabled vehicle and clear the road.
Tow trucks can only drive in emergency stopping lanes on freeways:
- To remove or tow damaged/disabled vehicles from an accident scene or incident on that freeway.
- At times when driving in other lanes is not possible due to congestion or obstructions.
When travelling in an emergency stopping lane drivers must:
- Activate the vehicle’s yellow flashing or rotating warning lights
- Travel no faster than 40 km/h
- Provide clear passage to emergency vehicles at all times.
Drivers must comply with:
- The Transport Act 1983
- The Road Safety Act 1986
- The Accident Towing Services Act 2007
- Any other regulations, codes of practice, rules or standards made under those Acts
- Requirements or conditions of their licence/permit (including permits issued under Part 5 of the Road Safety (Vehicles) Regulations 1999.
