How much will you be charged?

The following information outlines the amounts charged by tow truck operators for towing and storing damaged motor vehicles that weigh less than four tonnes from the scene of an accident within the Controlled Area of Melbourne. The charges are outlined in the Transport Act 1983 (Victorian Legislation website, choose Victorian Law Today, select Acts, choose 'T') and include GST.

Towing fees

Towing charges are based on the distance from the authorised depot to the accident scene, and then from the accident scene to the address to where the vehicle is towed in the Controlled Area.

Base fee (includes the first 8 kilometres travel by tow truck) - $168.45

Additional per kilometre for travel beyond the first eight kilometres - $2.65 

After-hours surcharge is in addition to the above during the times below - $57.55

  • 5 pm to 8 am Mondays to Fridays
  • 5 pm Fridays to 8 am Mondays
  • midnight to midnight on public holidays.

Storage charges at repairers
The following maximum rates apply for secure storage of damaged motor vehicles following towing from the scene of an accident within the Controlled Area:

Per day
Car - under cover $12.90
Car - in locked yard $8.60
Motorcycle - under cover $4.35
Motorcycle - in locked yard $2.80
