Information for customers

There is information that a tow truck driver should give to the owner or driver of a vehicle damaged in a crash before the person signs an ‘Authority to tow’.  The tow truck driver must take reasonable steps to:

  • give the person a copy of Towing from a crash scene - your rights [PDF, 172KB, 1pp].  This information is about the person’s consumer rights and is approved by VicRoads; and
  • explain to the customer the extent of their right to have the vehicle towed to a destination of their choice.

Tow truck operators can obtain multiple copies of Towing from a crash scene - your rights [PDF, 172KB, 1pp] by:

  • downloading the information and printing copies to give to customers.  These copies should be printed on a standard A4 sized piece of paper; or
  • purchasing a pad with multiple copies of the information from the VACC's Stationery Store, by calling (03) 9829 1191.

The tow truck driver can use the wording from Towing from a crash scene - your rights [PDF, 172KB, 1pp] as a guide to what they should say, when explaining the extent of a person’s right to choose where their vehicle is towed.
