Prior to 1 January 2009, holders of an accident tow truck licence will be sent a temporary permit in accordance with section 35 of the Accident Towing Services Act 2007, as part of the transition to the new Act. If you do not receive a temporary permit before 31 December 2008, please email towing@roads.vic.gov.au or telephone Accident Towing Enquiries between 9.00 am and 4.00 pm Monday to Friday on (03) 9854 2715.
The temporary permit ensures that when the new Act commences on 1 January 2009, the weight that your tow truck is legally allowed to tow now will continue to be the same. This means that your tow truck can continue to tow up to its safe carrying capacity, regardless of whether this is below or above four tonnes.
This will maintain your current rights.
The temporary permit is valid from 1 January 2009 to 30 June 2009. During that time, you must ensure that the temporary permit is carried in the tow truck whenever the tow truck is being driven or is at a crash scene.
The temporary permit is not required after 30 June 2009.
