The National Heavy Vehicle Regulator
The National Heavy Vehicle Regulator has assumed control of the majority of regulatory responsibilities in those states (like Victoria) and territories where this Law has commenced.
One set of national laws and penalties
Australia’s freight transport is now delivered under standardised regulations for mass, dimension and loading. Nationally consistent penalties promote consistent and transparent enforcement. The Regulator’s website contains a summary of all penalties and infringements under the HVNL.
National approach to fatigue management
Nationally consistent fatigue management laws take a new approach to fatigue management, which includes a new risk classification system for advanced fatigue management. The National Driver Work Diary is easy to fill out, and includes advice on the fatigue laws and examples to guide you. The National Driver Work Diary can be purchased for $20 at the same places in Victoria where you currently buy your work diary.
National vehicle standards and modifications
The Regulator processes all applications for heavy vehicle standards modifications and exemption permits outside the National Code of Practice VSB6. (All other modification approvals within the National Code of Practice can be made through an approved vehicle examiner in Victoria. Existing approved vehicle examiner schemes and services in Victoria will continue to be managed by VicRoads.) Additionally, drivers and operators can take advantage of mutual interstate recognition of inspections and defect clearances.
