Metropolitan tram network

It is the operator’s responsibility to contact the relevant third party to determine if support is required. The following information is intended to provide initial guidance and should be confirmed when contacting the third party.

Third party: Yarra Trams

Support required for: All vehicles that exceed specified mass and dimension

Yarra Trams’ network includes tramway tracks and overhead power lines in the majority of metropolitan Melbourne, as well as roadside infrastructure such as tram stops and under-road equipment.

Operators of vehicles that exceed the following mass and dimensions must seek Yarra Trams’ support to cross tram tracks:

  • 3m overall height
  • 0m overall width
  • 26m overall length.

Applications should be made at https://transport.vic.gov.au/getting-around/roads/over-dimensional-load-permits-for-travel-across-railways-and-tramways

Applications are typically processed within six weeks. Superloads require additional time.

Fees

Yarra Trams may charge fees for its support. Fees can be as low as $14.22 if no conditions or escorts are required but may exceed $17,000 per day for superloads or $13,000 per day for standard over-dimensional loads, depending on the amount of notice. Where less than four weeks’ notice is provided, costs can escalate sevenfold if lifting of wires is required, with power isolation costs charged in addition to the standard fees.
