Overhead telecommunication lines

It is the operator’s responsibility to contact the relevant third party to determine if support is required. The following information is intended to provide initial guidance and should be confirmed when contacting the third party.

Third parties: Optus, Telstra

Support required for: Vehicles over 4.6m in height

Optus assets

Operators of vehicles over 4.6m in height seeking travel under Optus assets must seek support from Optus [email protected]

Applications to Optus typically require the following information:

  • Height of the combination (including load)
  • Width of the combination (including load)
  • Length of the combination (including load)
  • Suspension type (all axles)
  • The planned route
  • Date and time of movement
  • Whether the height of the combination can be lowered via suspension controls

Applications for vehicles below 5.0m in height are typically processed within five business days. Applicants for vehicles exceeding 5.5m requiring a route assessment and an escort should allow at least one month.

Fees

Optus may charge fees for it support. Optus does not typically charge an access fee except where a route assessment is required.

Cost recovery is applied to route assessments and escort services. For vehicles and loads above 5.0m, a physical route audit including physically driving and inspecting the route will normally be undertaken. The requirement will be waived where an audit of the same route has been recently undertaken.

Where route assessments reveal no issues, costs will not be incurred by the applicant. Optus charges up to $4500 per eight-hour period where escorts are required.

Applicants for vehicles below 5.0m in height should allow up to two business days for their application to be processed.

Applicants for vehicles exceeding 5.5m in height should allow 10-15 business days for their application to be processed.

Telstra assets

Operators of vehicles over 4.6m in height seeking travel under Telstra assets must seek support from the Telstra High Loads Team [email protected] or 1800 047 909

Applications to Telstra typically require the following information:

  • Height of the combination (including load)
  • Width of the combination (including load)
  • Length of the combination (including load)
  • The planned route
  • Date and time of movement

Applicants seeking to reduce time and cost can undertake their own route assessment for review by the Telstra High Loads Team. This assessment should include a physical review of the route noting the measured heights of Telstra assets that may pose a clearance issue.

Fees

Telstra may charge fees for it support. Telstra does not typically charge an access fee except where a route assessment is undertaken.

Fees for a Telstra subcontractor can range from $500 to over $10,000 depending on the number of trips, length of the route and degree to which overhead assets must be cleared.
