Indigenous employment program

The VicRoads Indigenous Employment Program comprises a range of initiatives to encourage Indigenous Australians to consider VicRoads as an employer.

Our corporate target is for 1% of all ongoing roles to be filled by Indigenous staff by June 2015.

Our Indigenous staff, including trainees and casual staff, are supported by the Indigenous employment team and attend the 2-day VicRoads Indigenous staff conference at the start of each year.

Indigenous traineeships

Traineeships are generally for 12 months and include workplace training in Certificate III studies. We advertise in local papers and the Koori Mail to seek expressions of interest from young job seekers interested to learn new skills such as business administration and customer service.

Indigenous secondary school scholarships

Indigenous secondary school students have a lower Year 12 completion rate than other students. Our Indigenous secondary school scholarships provide financial assistance to secondary school students to assist with their studies.

To apply you need to complete an VicRoads Indigenous Secondary School Scholarship Application Form including:

  • a reference from an Indigenous referee who is not an immediate family member
  • a reference from a member of the teaching staff or principal at your school.
You must submit your application by the due date to the address listed on the application form.

Indigenous tertiary scholarships

We provide a pathway for Indigenous undergraduates considering VicRoads as an employer, by offering up to two Indigenous tertiary scholarships each year.

Each scholarship is valued at $12,000 and students are required to apply for the VicRoads Vacation Employment program which takes place during the summer vacation period (November to February).

Graduate program

From 2011 we will allocate up to four of our Graduate Program places to Indigenous graduates who meet the requirements of our selection process.

Information about Indigenous opportunities within the program will be made available through all Koori units at Victorian universities and TAFE colleges at the beginning of each academic year.

Indigenous tertiary students and graduates interested to learn more can contact the Indigenous Employment Coordinator on (03) 9854 2099.

For more information on any of programs above or to get an application form for the Indigenous secondary school scholarships, contact the Indigenous Employment Project Officer on (03) 9854 2967.

Indigenous employment opportunities

We encourage Indigenous job seekers to view and consider all VicRoads current employment vacancies (External link)

Job seekers interested in other government roles may also view the Careers in Victorian Government website (External link)

As part of the VicRoads Indigenous Employment Program, a number of roles are advertised each year seeking Indigenous candidates only. These advertisements include a VCAT exemption number indicating permission from the Equal Opportunity Act to positively discriminate in specific instances. These roles are advertised in both local papers and the Koori Mail.
