Join the conversation on proposed Westall Rd extension

19 June 2017

VicRoads is asking residents, road and public transport users for their feedback about travelling  through and accessing the busy Monash National Employment and Innovation Cluster (Monash NEIC).

The Monash NEIC is one of the nation’s most important business, educational, medical and scientific research precincts and includes Melbourne’s largest concentration of employment outside the CBD.

The precinct is home to Monash University; Monash Medical Centre; the Synchrotron; Monash Business Park and nearby activity centres at Clayton and Brandon Park.

VicRoads and the Victorian Government are considering a proposal to extend Westall Road from Princes Highway in Westall to the M1 Freeway, with a business case currently being developed.

VicRoads Director Integration Services Andrew Wall said the business case would make recommendations to the Government to improve traffic movement from Princes Highway to Monash Freeway and freight access to commercial areas in Moorabbin, Braeside and Dandenong South.

“The proposed extension is expected to divert traffic and freight vehicles from the heavily trafficked Blackburn, Springvale and Clayton roads. For example, Blackburn Road could see up to a 55% reduction in traffic volumes,” Mr Wall said.

Together with the construction of the planned Mordialloc bypass, the extension will play a vital role in linking the Mornington Peninsula and southern and bay side suburbs to the central city via the Monash Freeway.

“It will help link the National and Innovation Employment Clusters in Monash and Dandenong and Improve access to strategic transport routes in the south-east for commuters and freight,” Mr Wall said.

“The community’s views will help shape the business case to support future funding and construction of the extension.

The business case will also examine access to local residential areas, the design of access points, speed limits, and other opportunities for traffic and safety improvements.

People interested in sharing their travel experiences in and around the area can go online to VicRoads’ community engagement website, or attend a drop-in information session.

The drop-in sessions will be held on Thursday 29 June, between 3pm and 6:30pm at the Notting Hill Neighbourhood House, 37 Westerfield Dr, Notting Hill and Thursday 20 July, between 3pm and 6:30pm at the Monash Community Inn, 72 Clayton Rd, Clayton VIC 3168.
