VicRoads senior leaders visiting Wonthaggi
Senior leaders from VicRoads will be returning to South Gippsland to continue the conversation around country roads, with a community session in Wonthaggi on Tuesday 11 July.
In May, the VicRoads leadership team made the journey to Korumburra and Leongatha before travelling across Gippsland and driving along the Great Alpine Road to North East Victoria.
“We gathered a lot of information from our recent trip across Gippsland and the Latrobe Valley before heading across the Alpine region,” VicRoads Chief Executive John Merritt said.
“We now have an opportunity to return to South Gippsland, in particular Wonthaggi, where we will be able to meet community members and better understand how they rely on the arterial road network.”
A community pop in session will be held at the Wonthaggi Old Post Office, between 5pm and 7pm, on Tuesday 11 July.
Mr Merritt said this presented an opportunity for South Gippslanders to have their say on what happens next to their roads.
“A doubling of the maintenance budget for this financial year makes it good timing for the community to shape what happens next,” Mr Merritt said.
“We know from our visit to Korumburra and Leongatha that the community is frustrated that we reduce speed limits because of poor road conditions and that the arterial roads are critical for freight movements and the farming industries.
“We have been able to take some action from the feedback, assessing the traffic lights sequencing in Leongatha after hearing from truck drivers, and planning a resurfacing program for Korumburra-Wonthaggi Road,” Mr Merritt said.
“We've also got strong tourism draw cards and growing townships, only two to three hours from Melbourne.
“We're really looking to understand how we can better support all of these industries and communities now and into the future,” Mr Merritt said.
